Alfonso Gomez, a 23-year-old truck driver for Goodwill SF Bay, began his journey with the organization as a donation attendant. Alfonso grew up learning how to drive trucks in Guatemala, where his father had a small trucking company.
Since moving to the United States eight years ago, Alfonso’s goal has been to obtain a Class A truck license and drive cross country for a living. After working various jobs, including restaurants and delivery services, Alfonso found Goodwill.
Alfonso started as a donation attendant at Goodwill SF Bay, but he couldn’t help but notice the trucks that came to pick up donations. Over time, he expressed his interest in driving them. With encouragement and support from his supervisors, particularly Mirsada Causevic. As he says, “My boss and mentor at Goodwill, Mirsada, has been a big part of my success. She did not give up on me. I did it because of her help. By training me to gain skills while supporting and caring, I’m now able to enjoy what I always dreamed of, which is achieving and doing my dream job.”
Alfonso began driving Class C trucks. His determination to advance led him to pursue a Class A license. Despite facing numerous challenges, including multiple unsuccessful attempts at the DMV tests and the need for extensive study, Alfonso's persistence paid off. He obtained his Class A license after several tries, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Now, Alfonso covers routes that include store pickups and deliveries in San Francisco. He enjoys the view from the driver's seat and finds peace behind the wheel. Alfonso remains committed to furthering his career and achieving his dream of driving across the United States.
