Goodwill and Google: Bridging the digital divide

Groundbreaking new Google-Goodwill initiative will equip 1.2 million people with vital digital skills.

One of the primary factors that hold people back in today’s economy and can translate into a lifetime of limitations and poverty is lack of technological skills. SF Goodwill and Google are joining forces to address this critical shortfall in our workforce—and as a result, giving thousands of Bay Area residents the opportunity to compete for liveable wage jobs.
SF Goodwill was recently selected as a recipient of a Google digital skills training grant. The Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator, funded by a $10 million grant from Google.org and with the assistance of 1,000 Google volunteers, will equip more than a million people nationwide to participate in crucial digital skills training over the next three years at Goodwill
Career Centers, enabling them to become more marketable and gain a foothold in today’s tech-dominated labor market.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote, “… We rolled out a “Grow with Google” program, and partnered with Goodwill to incorporate digital skills training into its already amazing training infrastructure for job seekers. One trainee spoke of the value of her own experiences. ‘Before I learned digital skills, I felt unsure of myself’ she says. ‘Now I feel confident.”

According to the US Department of Labor, there are nearly six million job openings in the United States, and many of these jobs remain unfilled because applicants lack specific skills employees need, such as digital skills. This innovative partnership between SF Goodwill and Google gives Goodwill the opportunity to lead the charge to help job seekers gain a foothold in thrive in today’s new economy.
