Darren Primes: “If you do what Goodwill asks of you, they are willing to teach you.”

March 12, 2010

SUCCESS STORY

It has been said that a person has to hit rock bottom before they can start finding their way up again, and Darren Primes knows just what that means. He had a good job and a solid work history for companies including Lockheed and Ford and took care of his wife and family -- that was until he started using crack cocaine and his life began a steep spiral downward.

He became addicted to drugs, lost the support of his wife and children, and spent the next 20 years in and out of the prison system, first in the state penitentiary, then in Federal prison.

It was after his second stint in prison that Darren finally did reach rock bottom, and he was ready to change his life. His only regret is that he didn’t find it sooner. “From where I was raised, my rock bottom should have been a long time ago,” he said. “Before you know it, you’re 50 years old, and I blew it by using drugs. It’s not like I have a lifetime now. These bones are getting old. It was such a waste of time that I put myself through.”

Wendy Roberts: “Goodwill’s classes gave me confidence I never knew I had.”

March 12, 2010

SUCCESS STORY

After spending nine years as a stay at-home mom for her daughter Leah, Wendy Roberts was ready to get back to work – but starting a new career proved almost impossible.

“I just couldn’t find work,” she said. “My lapse in employment and lack of computer skills were holding me back.” She felt stuck; she was relying financially on a controlling boyfriend and had neither the skills nor the confidence to create a better situation.

She found Goodwill’s ReCompute program practically by accident. Wendy was taking classes at PeninsulaWorks, San Mateo County’s One Stop system, when one day she ran into a ReCompute recruiter, and she started the training program.

Wendy found that people skills were just as important as technical skills. She had to introduce herself to the entire class – no small feat for someone who felt like a wallflower. She also had to recruit more students for the program.

“I was so nervous, very scared, too timid and shy to talk to strangers,” she said. “But in class, I actually started to make friends, and I just bloomed.” Another surprising high point for Wendy came when she successfully took apart a computer and put it back together again. “I wouldn’t even unplug a computer before that class,” she said.

Thomas Beltrametti: "I was blessed with the Back On Track Program."

March 12, 2010

SUCCESS STORY

“Shell-shocked” is how Iraq war veteran Thomas Beltrametti described himself when he returned home after serving in the Army during the first surge. He had seen heavy combat, been wounded in multiple road-side bombs (which left shrapnel in his leg), was even grazed by a few enemy bullets. Despite suffering from depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) upon his return, he found success working for Wells Fargo as a mortgage consultant.

That is, until the housing market crashed. Thomas was left with nothing – he lost his job and his home in one fell swoop, and was desperate to find his way. With few options and fewer connections for support and help, Thomas made the decision to turn to the street economy to make ends meet – and he was caught with marijuana, during a traffic stop. “I got arrested on my mom’s birthday,” Thomas said. “I wasn’t able to call her or give her a gift – I was busy trying to get bail money.”

Then “I was blessed with the Back on Track program,” Thomas said. As a first-time, non-violent offender, Thomas was given an opportunity to join the program, graduate, and have the charges against him dropped. “I took it by the horns,” he said. “I told them I’d finish in a year, and I finished in exactly one year.”

A Care Tag for Our Planet: Levi’s Care Tags Promote Donating to Goodwill

January 25, 2010

NEWS

Goodwill and Levi’s have launched a new initiative nationally, ‘A Care Tag for Our Planet’, designed at diverting billions of pounds of unwanted clothing from landfills. The project was piloted in San Francisco and is the brainchild of BBDO West, Goodwill San Francisco's pro bono strategic branding agency.

Levi’s jeans now feature a care tag that encourages owners to donate to Goodwill when no longer needed. The tags are a unique vehicle for educating consumers about how to care for their clothes responsibly.

Donating to Goodwill not only diverts unwanted items from landfills, but also helps people. Donations of gently used clothing and other items are sold in Goodwill stores, where the revenues help fund job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and those facing other challenges to finding employment.

CEO Letter
Thoughts on Haiti

January 25, 2010

CEO Letter

Dear Goodwill Family,

Like many of you, we’ve been watching the heartbreaking reports coming from Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake and its aftershocks centered near the impoverished Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti. In times of major natural disasters, the short-term need is for clean water and medical personnel as well as funds to ensure care can be administered to survivors. Goodwill does not typically provide the kind of help that is needed following this kind of a major natural disaster.  Nevertheless, we don’t need to sit by helplessly.  There are things that we can do as an organization and individually.

Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties has donated $1,000 to the San Francisco branch of the Red Cross, specifically for Haiti Disaster Relief.

GOODWILL ANNUAL REPORT
Goodwill Participants Transform Their Lives Through the Power of Work

December 4, 2009

GOODWILL ANNUAL REPORT

Goodwill's Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2008-2009 is now available. Included in the Annual Report is a letter from CEO Deborah Alvarez-Rodriguez.

Dear Goodwill friends:

We all want to hear positive stories of people and programs that are working and lives that are being transformed, especially as we approach the end of this very challenging year. I have a great one to share! This is the story of Goodwill’s impact on a young man named Craig Bolland.  It is also an invitation to create opportunities for others like Craig to undergo a personal transformation.

A couple of years ago, Craig was convinced his days were numbered. He was addicted to drugs, broke, homeless (when he wasn’t in jail), and alienated from family and friends. “I assumed that I’d overdose or die on the street,” he says. “Sometimes, that’s what I wished for.”

Today, Craig marvels at his good fortune: he’s reunited with his family he has a job he loves, colleagues who count on him, a bank account, and a place of his own. He’s also clean and sober. The greatest change, however, is even more obvious: He now has self-confidence and a sense of purpose.

Jobs for Our Community Campaign a Success

October 1, 2009

Earlier this year, Goodwill realized that our community faced the most severe economy since the Great Depression. Tens of thousands of people in the Bay Area alone had lost their jobs as a result of the economic crisis. People who faced severe barriers to employment – including disabilities, past addiction, past incarceration and lack of experience – were having an even tougher time finding jobs. These are the people Goodwill serves. Without Goodwill’s help, they were at risk of falling back into poverty.

In January 2009, we set out to raise one million dollars so that we could provide for a basic human need: the right and ability to work. We made a commitment to serve everyone who needed our help in looking for and preparing for work. That meant not turning away a single person who needed our help. Whoever came through our doors was going to get job-placement counseling and support. They all got it. No one we could serve was turned away. Not one.

Bayview Hope Transportation Academy: Edwin Yoc-Aguilar

January 21, 2009

SUCCESS STORY

Before enrolling at the Bayview Hope Transportation Academy (BHTA), Edwin Yoc-Aguilar was having trouble paying his bills. He was working long hours as a cook in a restaurant, but wasn’t making enough to support his family, given the Bay Area’s high cost of living.

A Mexican immigrant with limited English and few employment skills, Edwin was finding the pathway out of poverty elusive, despite a desire to learn and a strong work ethic. Most job training programs he looked into, for example, were out of his price range. “I wanted the training, but just couldn’t afford it,” he said.

Back on Track: Cherisse Jones

Cherisse Jones was unemployed, raising two children and caring for an ill grandmother, when a non-violent drug offense threatened to slap her with a felony conviction. “I was spiraling out of control and wasn’t focused on doing the right thing,” she says of that time in her life.

A felony would have damaged Cherisse’s chances for employment, making it  hard for her to support her family or create a better future for her children.  But thanks to Back on Track, an innovative partnership between the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and Goodwill, Cherisse earned job skills, employment, and a shot at a clean slate. A year after her conviction, all Cherisse’s charges were dropped.
